IZ- US National Parasite Collections Management Assistant
Where:
Washington,DC
Location:
NMNH: Natural History Museum

NMNHVolunteer@si.edu
Description:
The purpose of this specific project is to assist with the reorganization, rehousing, and curation the USNPC cataloged fluid preserved collection. This work is critical to increase the accessibility, improve the physical care, and direct conservation efforts of the USNPC material. Duties include pulling specimen lots from the Collection, printing labels, washing out vials, transferring specimens into new vials/jars, exchanging fluid in the jars for 70% ethanol. All work is done at the Museum Support Center in Suitland, MD working with gloves and sometimes microscopes. There are thousands of specimens lots to be recurated, so we need as many hands as we can get at this point. It takes a bit of training to get up to speed, so we would like it if someone could come for at least 3 days a week to keep up with the latest developments of the project. Ideally, the volunteer would have worked on a collections management project within the NMNH previously, but , we are willing to train right now. This project would also be ideal for students needing class credit for an internship in museum collections management.
