Description:
Big Top Volunteers greet and seat visitors, and assist with clearing the house after performances. In addition to presenting a professional appearance and maintaining a pleasant disposition, they must be able to lift 30 lbs., climb stairs, and stand unaided for 60 minutes. Attention to visitor service and safety is of utmost importance; all volunteers must attend an orientation/safety briefing prior to their shift (this briefing will take place the same day they are scheduled to volunteer). Attire: Black slacks or skorts, (no shorts), white shirt and optional black jacket/sweater, comfortable dark shoes. Shifts: 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Description:
Educator Volunteers will aid in the Circus Science area of the Circus Arts program. Children of all ages will engage in lively STEAM education activities to learn some of the principles behind the skills of circus performers, such as tight rope walking and juggling, as well as how circus uses simple machines to raise the big top and help circus artist perform. By participating, educators will gain access to ideas for adapting the activities in their own classrooms, as well as helping young Festival visitors get the most out of their experience. Advance materials explaining the activities, and a short training session the day of volunteering will be offered. Multiple days of volunteering are preferred but not required.

Volunteers are required to bring their own digital camera with them each evening they volunteer. Photographs will be archived at the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, and used for media and promotion materials. **All Photo Documentation Volunteers must submit a portfolio of 8-15 images via a Dropbox link, a link to a personal website, or a photo sharing program such as Flickr (No Instagram or Tumblr sites please). Volunteers should have some experience in flash photography. DSLR's and mirrorless cameras are required. No point and shoots.

Volunteers will be provided with information to convey to the public about the Smithsonian's recycling/composting effort and will guide the public to place their recyclables and compostable trash into the proper containers. The Smithsonian is committed to sustainability and setting an example of environmental responsibility. This recycling/composting initiative is designed to serve as an example for all public events on the National Mall and elsewhere.
